History and Cautions

There are a few "do's" and "don'ts" where Essential Oils are concerned. Should you have any queries please do not hesitate to contact me.

Babies, Children and Infants

Babies and infants (under 7 years of age) must only be treated with only the oils listed below, they, and to a lesser extent children, require a smaller dosage of oil than adults to obtain the same effective results.

Babies 0-12 months - One drop of Lavender or Roman Chamomile

Infants 1-6 years - One - three drops of Tea Tree, Lavender or Roman Chamomile

Children 7-12 years - Use as for adults but half the number of drops of essential oil

Children 12 years + - Use as directed for adults

Stimulating oils and those which have an emmengogic effect (helping to bring on periods) should not be used during pregnancy.

Basil, Clove, Cinnamon, Hyssop, Juniper, Marjoram, Myrrh, Sage and Thyme should not be used at all during pregnancy.

Fennel, Peppermint and Rosemary may be used after 4 months have passed.

Keep essential oils away from the eyes. Should oils get into the eyes wash with plenty of water and seek immediate medical advice.

Homeopathic Treatments

If you're taking any Homeopathic remedies then consult your Homeopath and avoid the following oils:

Black Pepper, Camphor, Eucalyptus and Peppermint, they may nullify the Homeopaths preparations.

There are times when a person's skin may be sensitive to a particular oil, often the stimulating ones, causing irritation. Generally the irritation will disappear within the hour. Massaging plain Sweet Almond Oil on the affected area will help. Women may find skin sensitivity increases just before their period or at ovulation. This is due to hormonal changes on the body.

If sensitivity occurs, refrain from using the particular oil for 10 days, then, you may try again diluting the oil to one quarter of the original amount and test this on a small area of skin. If no reaction occurs you can continue to use the oils as normal.

Below you will find links to different oils where you will find information regarding both the history of that oil and the cautions you should be aware of. The oils are listed alphabetically.
